Good, Fast, Cheap… Pick Two
There's a new article about layoffs and slashed budgets in tech every day, it seems. Recession fears are forcing most teams to do more with less.
So it's a good time to remind yourself (or leadership in your company) that when it comes to things being done good, fast, and cheap—you can only pick two.
And since most businesses are picking cheap (from either a budget or resources perspective), then leaders should be aware they only get to pick one other condition.
So if you want it cheap and fast—it won't be good.
And if you want it cheap and good—it won't be fast.
But if cheap is non-negotiable—and most tech businesses are saying it is—then something else has to give.
Cutting resources and budgets, and then demanding the same quality and speed of work from your team is a surefire way to burn out, frustrate, and lose good people.
So don't do it.
Acknowledge the circumstances to your team. Offer them support wherever possible. Accept the reality of producing work in these times. Show your team gratitude for what they do.
And pick two.
